Boys Athlete of the Week (Nov. 13): Tyler Spear, Loyola, cross country

The senior won his second straight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association cross country championship last week, leading the No. 5 Dons to their fifth consecutive team title. Spear, an All-Metro first-team runner last season, finished the Oregon Ridge course in 15 minutes, 41.7 seconds, the second fastest time in meet history. This fall, he won the Howard County Invitational and the Barnhart Invitational and finished fourth at the Spiked Shoe. Also All-Metro in indoor and outdoor track, Spear won the MIAA track and field 3,200 meter championship last spring. Considering Harvard among other schools, he has a 3.88 GPA. Spear will run in the Jesuit Cross Country Championships in New York on Saturday and the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Region qualifier in North Carolina Nov. 30.
