Scott Mitchell

South River, senior, pitcher-infielder

To say Mitchell contributed to South River's first state championship would be an understatement.

Mitchell led the No. 2 Seahawks (20-5) to a 6-0 win over No. 7 Catonsville in the Class 4A state championship game at Ripken Stadium, pitching a two-hitter. He held the Comets hitless until the sixth inning, striking out nine batters in the victory. Offensively, Mitchell had two doubles, two RBIs and a stolen base.

“He's a fierce competitor,” South River coach Ken Dunn said. “He has an inner fire and a composure you don't see in kids his age. He led by example.”

Mitchell finished 8-0 with a 0.31 ERA, including six complete games, this season. He had 88 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 68 innings.

At the plate, Mitchell batted .383 with one home run, three triples, eight doubles and 18 RBIs. He led the Seahawks with 29 runs scored.

Mitchell, a four-year starter who will play at Radford, finished his career with a 25-8 record and 2.36 ERA.
