Girl Athlete of the Week (Sept. 26): Jillian Savageau, Archbishop Spalding, soccer

The junior goalkeeper was at her best when the No.1 Cavaliers visited No. 2 McDonogh on Sept. 19, and it was needed. In regulation and two 10-minute overtimes, Savageau made 18 saves to help Spalding (5-0-2) earn a 0-0 tie and stay in first place in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference.

Tested throughout the game, she made diving saves in each half of regulation on shots from Kemper Robinson and made a nifty reaction save on a shot from Lilly McCarthy. She also helped clear 13 corner kicks earned by the Eagles.

A three-year varsity player and two-year starter, Savageau has 74 saves while allowing one goal this season with six shutouts. She is receiving interest from Saint Joseph’s University, along with a number of in-state schools.

Others considered: Rachel Fleig, Chesapeake-AA, field hockey; Grace Gower, Mount de Sales, soccer.
