Player of the Year: Kristen Malloy, Hereford
Malloy had a great season last year before
finishing third in the state meet. This year was
much different. She set a meet record at the
Bull Run Invitational for the second straight
year and had a nearly perfect season. The
junior capped it by winning the Baltimore
County, regional and Class 3A state titles.
She was challenged once again in the state
meet, needing a strong kick in the final .1 of a
mile to outlast Howard's Elyse Borisko, who
had finished second in last year's race.
Sara Bailey, C. Milton Wright
Bailey anchored the
Mustangs' run to the Class 4A
The senior was consistent all
season, running especially well in
the state championship race, as
her seventh-place effort helped
C.M.Wright edge Eleanor
Roosevelt of Prince George's
County by one point.
Elyse Borisko, Howard
Borisko just missed winning an
individual state title this year,
losing to Hereford's Kristen
Malloy in the final .1 of a mile in the
Class 3A state meet. She finished
third in last year's Class 2A state
race and kept improving this year.
The junior helped the Lions
take this fall's Class 3A state title.
She also ran well in several big
meets, winning the Class 3A East
regional, taking second in the
Howard County championships
and third at Bull Run.
Katie Harman, River Hill
She had to battle some injury
problems midway through the
season but bounced back to finish
strongly, sweeping the Howard
County,Class 2A South regional
and state championships.
The junior edged Howard's
Elyse Borisko on a cold, rainy day
at the Howard County meet and
rolled from there. Harman played
a huge role in River Hill's girls
capturing the Class 2A state title.
Liya Kasimova, Severna Park
The senior ended her high
school cross country career on a
bit of a down note with a
15th-place finish in the Class 4A
state meet one week after
winning the East regional. She
finished second at the Anne
Arundel County championships.
Kasimova also took second in
the Knights Invitational and Disney Invitational and was fifth in
the Bull Run at Hereford.
Emma Larkin, Dulaney
Larkin came back strong after
missing much of last fall with injury
problems. The senior anchored
the Dulaney lineup and played a
big role in the Lions winning the
Baltimore County championship
and finishing third in the Class 4A
She was second in both the
county and North regional races
before her 10th-place finish in the
tough Class 4A state race.
Hillary Lee, South River
Lee followed up a fine debut
as a freshman with another strong
season.Her best effort might
have been at the Anne Arundel
County championships, which
she won in 19 minutes, 36
The sophomore followed that
with a second-place effort at the
Class 4A East regional and an
11th-place finish in the state meet.
Maura Linde, Century
Linde began her varsity career
in style. The freshman ran well
early in the season, then took off
in the second half.
She placed 29th in the
Howard County Invitational and
59th in Bull Run. Later in the
season, she finished third in the
Monocacy Valley Athletic League
championships and won the
Carroll County title and the Class
2A West regional crown. Linde
then ran a strong race in bad
weather at states, finishing second
in 19 minutes, 59 seconds.
Erika Stasakova, John Carroll
The senior developed into one
of the area's top runners during
her career at John Carroll and
made her final season a
memorable one. Stasakova
posted a string of victories at big
meets (Bobcat Invitational, Disney
Invitational, private schools state
Athletic Association of Maryland
A Conference championship).
She finished second in the IAAM
Maeve Ricaurte, Glenelg
Ricaurte was a strong runner
all season but turned in her best
performance in the IAAM
championship race. That's when
the B Conference runner finished
first overall in 19 minutes, 1 second,
beating A Conference rival Erika
Stasakova of John Carroll by nine
seconds. Ricaurte, a junior, then
took third at the private schools
state championships. She played a
major role in the Dragons going
undefeated to take the
B Conference regular-season title.
