Boys Athlete of the Week (April 29, 2014): Christian Hamel, Archbishop Curley, baseball( Handout / April 28, 2014 )
The senior catcher led the No. 5 Friars (13-7) to a 3-1 week that featured wins over Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association foes Gilman, Loyola and McDonogh, which moved Archbishop Curley into second place. In an 8-7 win over Gilman on April 21, he went 3-for-4 with one double, one homer, three RBIs and one run scored. On April 22, the Friars beat Loyola, 4-2, with Hamel collecting two hits in three plate appearances with a home run, three RBIs and run scored. After hitting his third homer in three days -- while also doubling and driving in four runs in a 13-8 loss to St. Ignatius (Ohio) -- Hamel was 2-for-4 with two doubles in a 10-8 win over McDonogh. On Friday, Hamel doubled in a run against Bel Air before play was suspended due to rain. A captain for the Friars, Hamel maintains a 3.7 GPA and plans to attend IMG Sports Academy in Bradenton, Fla., after graduation.
