Boys Athlete of the Week (Dec. 11, 2013): Steven Smothers, Franklin, football( Handout photo / December 3, 2013 )
The sophomore wide receiver made a highlight-reel catch for a touchdown that gave No. 5 Franklin (12-2) all the momentum it would need to win its first state football championship, 20-7, over Linganore in the Class 3A title game Thursday. On fourth-and-20 late in the third quarter of a tie game, Smothers made a leaping grab on Jacquez Adams' 27-yard pass and somehow managed to keep one foot in bounds as he fell backward out of the right side of the end zone. Against a defense keenly aware of his blazing speed and big-play history, Smothers also scored on a 24-yard reception that tied the game at 7 in the second quarter. He had three catches for 57 yards in the title game, finishing the season with 1,052 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. Smothers, also a top return man, already is considering offers from some of the best college programs in the country, including Florida State, Ohio State and Georgia.
Others considered: Drew Edwards, Calvert Hall, basketball; David Hollingsworth, Owings Mills, wrestling; Dwayne Morgan, St. Frances, basketball; Omari George, City, basketball; Donta Smith, Douglass, football
