Girls Athlete of the Week (Sept. 18, 2013): Sydney Biniak, Howard, volleyball( Handout photo / September 17, 2013 )
The senior hitter led the No. 2 Lions to a three-game sweep against No. 3 Centennial in a Howard County showdown last Tuesday. Biniak, who is in her fourth season on varsity, finished with 16 kills, 10 digs and three service aces as Howard won by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 26-24. It's the first time Howard has defeated Centennial, a 14-time state champion, since head coach Grant Scott has been with the program dating back to 1999. Last season, Biniak finished with 166 kills, 168 digs and 68 service aces in 62 games. Biniak also is a standout forward on the basketball team and competes in the high jump for the outdoor track and field team. She plans to play volleyball in college, but has yet to make a commitment.
