A solid senior season for Bullen culminated with a sweep of the Anne Arundel County, Class 3A East regional and state meets.
In the Class 3A state meet at Hereford, Bullen battled several other good runners before making a late charge to win, edging Howard's Danny Rau by just seven-tenths of a second.
Bullen, who was around fourth place before running into the lead in the final 800 meters, finished with the second-fastest time in any of the four classes -- 16 minutes, 19.5 seconds.
In September, Bullen finished third in the elite division of the Bull Run Invitational at Hereford with a time of 16:37.
As the only local runner to win an individual state championship, the victory wrapped up a perfect postseason for Bullen.
He set a course record at Annapolis when he won the Anne Arundel County championship with a time of 16:29.47, beating fellow All-Metro first-team pick Ryan Forsyth of Severna Park by over 20 seconds.
"I just kind of laid down the hammer," Bullen said after winning the county title. "It hurt, but I felt great. This is what I've trained for."
After finishing his high school career in track and field, Bullen hopes to run for Navy in college.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
