Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year: Josh Alcombright, Severna Park
Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year: Josh Alcombright, Severna Park (Kenneth K. Lam, Baltimore Sun / December 5, 2012)
Alcombright and the Falcons wanted to rebound after placing second in the Class 4A state championship meet last year, 30 points behind first-place finisher Walter Johnson, so they focused on being ready this fall.
With their goal in mind, the Severna Park boys practiced and trained as hard as they could, Alcombright said. The Falcons' work paid off as they placed all five runners in the top 17 of this year's state championship, scoring 47 points and easily gaining revenge on second-place Walter Johnson (93) to win the title.
"This team was focused on a singular goal and was determined to reach it," Alcombright said. "It never mattered to them how they got the job done, who finished first on the team was not a concern, winning together was the only goal and they did that all season long."
The Falcons, led by All-Metro first-team selections Ryan Forsyth and Jimmy Shipley, scored 24 points in each of the Anne Arundel County and Class 4A regional meets, winning both races.
While Forsyth and Shipley paced the Falcons, Alcombright was proud that the team received contributions from a number of good runners this season.
