Joe Abdelkader is hoping to help shape the next generation of athletes that skate at the professional level - just like his son.

The Muskegon Lumberjacks announced Wednesday they have hired Abdelkader as the team's Housing and Academic Coordinator.

Joe is the father of Detroit Red Wings forward and Muskegon Mona Shores graduate, Justin Abdelkader.

"It's really neat," Justin said in a text to FOX 17. "He has a passion for hockey and working with kids being in education for so long."

Joe taught in the Reeths Puffer School district for 35 years and also helped coach various sports.

“Joe is a perfect fit for our organization,” said Lumberjacks President/COO Tim Taylor. “He has limitless energy and is very passionate about what we’re doing. He wants to further our efforts in building one of the best junior programs in hockey.”

Justin won a Clark Cup title with the USHL's Cedar Rapids team. He also won an NCAA Championship at Michigan State and a Stanley Cup in his rookie season with Detroit.
