The Lions have taken a very important step in making sure their recent success continues.

On Friday, Lion's management and head coach Jim Schwartz agreed on a new contract extension to keep Schwartz in the Motor City. This is an expected move due to Schwartz's hand in the amazing turnaround of the once abysmal Lions. He inherited a Lions team that had gone an NFL worst record 0-16 the year before and transformed them into a playoff contender in just three years. The team won two, six and ten games in Schwartz's first 3 years respectively and arguably could have found success even faster without key injuries to quarterback Matthew Stafford in his first two seasons under center.

Schwartz, A defensive guru, spent most of his NFL career in Tennessee as the defensive coordinator for one of the decade's most vaunted defenses. Under schwartz, the Titan's defense focal point was on stopping the run. In 5 of schwartz's 8 years as defensive coordinator the Titans were in the top 10 in rush defense. The Titans finished an NFL best 13-3 and won the AFC South due in large part to dominance on the Defensive side of the ball.

Schwartz's defensive success did not end when he arrived in Detroit for the 2009 season as the Lions were the NFL's most improved defense in points allowed as they gave up an astonishing 125 fewer points than in 2008.

The team's defense continues to take great steps in getting better and owes its success in large part due to something Schwartz has a passion for, the defensive line. The Lion's front 4 may be the most feared unit in football with the likes of the red-eyed Kyle Vanden Bosch and the firey Ndamukong Suh. Now the team is focusing on improving the defense behind that front 4 and trying to turn around the 22nd ranked passing defense.

The financial terms and duration of the deal are still uncertain but the Lion's have taken a step into the right direction by keeping the Lion's head man. Although the deal may be uncertain, the expectations are not.

Lion's fans want more success and Schwartz is ready to deliver it.
