Arrival time for Suggs is up in air
The Ravens are beginning to sound less optimistic that defensive end-linebacker Terrell Suggs will report on time to training camp in Westminster.
On a day when rookie quarterback Joe Flacco signed a five-year, $30 million contract and general manager Ozzie Newsome announced the signing of the six remaining rookie draft picks, the mood changed when Newsome was asked whether Suggs would report with the rest of the veterans tomorrow.
"We're only talking about Joe and the draft choices today," Newsome said tersely.
Coach John Harbaugh spoke vaguely of Suggs' status. "We're going to find out," he said. "His situation is a little bit unique, and he's got to do what's best for him."
The Ravens put the franchise tag on Suggs in February, and both sides reached agreement on a one-year, $8.5 million deal this season. But he has not signed the tender and is therefore not under contract, which would permit him to avoid penalties or fines associated with skipping training camp.
End zone
The team will have all its rookie draft picks in camp for the second straight year. Running back Ray Rice (second round), linebacker Tavares Gooden (third), free safety Tom Zbikowski (third), free safety Haruki Nakamura (sixth), wide receiver Justin Harper (seventh) and running back Allen Patrick (seventh) either had signed or were scheduled to sign their three-year deals before Harbaugh's team meeting yesterday. ... Receiver Demetrius Williams will likely miss practice for a couple of days after suffering what the team called a lower-left leg injury.edward.lee@baltsun.com
