William and Mary quarterback Brent Caprio will miss at least one week, coach Jimmye Laycock said Tuesday, leaving Raphael Ortiz and Michael Graham to compete for the starter’s leading into Saturday’s home opener against Lafayette.

Caprio was sidelined with a left shoulder injury early in the second quarter of last Saturday’s 7-6 loss at Maryland. Ortiz, a redshirt sophomore with scant experience, played the final 2 1/2 quarters. He was the backup Saturday because Graham missed a week-and-a-half of practice with a foot injury and was under-prepared for the opener.

Graham, a redshirt junior from Charlottesville, has recovered sufficiently to practice.

“If Mike, I think, is back at full speed, we’ll look at him,” Laycock said. “Ortiz did a good enough job in there that we’ll look at him. We’ll see which one we start.”

Caprio completed 3 of 7 passes for 25 yards, with an interception, versus the Terps. Ortiz was 7-for-16 for 100 yards, as the Tribe coaching staff played conservatively on offense, relying on defense and field position.

Laycock said both played creditably, given the circumstances and the opposition. He said that the game plan for Lafayette won’t change a great deal, regardless of who’s at quarterback.

“We will continue to re-shape what we’re doing, based on ourselves,” he said, “and then try to match up with what we anticipate we’ll see from Lafayette. But we’re not in a situation where we’re going to tailor an offensive plan for, say, Mike and then an offensive plan for Ortiz, or something like that. We’re going to put them in there with basic stuff.”

In recent years, the Tribe has had to play multiple quarterbacks, due to injury and inconsistency. W&M played three quarterbacks in last season’s opener at Virginia and had three different starters through the year.

“It’s just like we told our quarterbacks in preseason,” Laycock said. “We want them to all think of themselves as starting quarterbacks. Only one can start a ballgame, but we want them to have a mindset that they’re all starting quarterbacks.”
