A season of heartbreak turned into euphoria as 11th-seeded William and Mary knocked off sixth seed James Madison 72-68 in the first round of the CAA tournament behind a tournament single-game record and career high 35 points from junior guard Quinn McDowell.

1:07 second half
William and Mary, down 68-67 with 1:07 to play, has just taken a 30-second timeout. The Tribe has the ball and is no doubt drawing up a way to get it to junior guard Quinn McDowell, who has tied the CAA tournament single-game scoring record with 34 points on 10-of-12 shooting, incuding 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
1:32 second half
James Madison was just awarded a timeout during a scramble for a rebound after Kendrix Brown missed a jumper from the top of the key.
2:51 second half
JMU coach Matt Brady just picked up a quick technical foul, and Quinn McDowell's nothing-but-net free throws have put the Tribe up 67-63 with 2:51 to play - and given McDowell 34 points, tying the CAA tournament single-game scoring record.
4:22 second half
JMU isn't going anywhere.
The Dukes have closed within 63-61 on Humpty Hitchens' wide-open 3-pointer from the left corner, and coach Tony Shaver has just taken a wise timeout for the Tribe. Settling in for a stretch run that will see if the young Tribe, plus a seemingly unstoppable Quinn McDowell, can hold on.
Not helping matters is the foul trouble facing the Tribe's guards. Junior Kendrix Brown and freshman Brandon Britt each have four.
7:50 second half
Somebody might want to guard Quinn McDowell.
Actually, JMU is, and the William and Mary junior guard still has 28 points on 9-of-10 shooting, including a 5-of-6 performance from 3-point range. His latest 3 just put the Tribe up 59-55 with 7:53 to play.
McDowell's free throws increased William and Mary's lead to 61-55 and gave him an even 30 with 6:52 to play. His drive in the lane also saddled Andrey Semenov, who has 15 points for the Dukes, with his fourth foul.
11:30 second half
It's 49-46 James Madison as the Tribe, prone to slow second-half starts this season, tries to fight back from another one.
The Tribe fell into an early four-point deficit in the second half, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Quinn McDowell and Brandon Britt gave William and Mary a 40-38 lead. But a quick 7-0 Dukes run put them up 45-40 and forced a Tribe timeout with 15:33 to play.
Senior Tribe center Marcus Kitts picked up his third foul with 16:53 to play, forcing William and Mary to rely on freshman Tim Rusthoven, who simply isn't the physical presence in the middle that Kitts is.
JMU made five of its first eight second-half shots.
It's 34-34 at halftime of William and Mary's first-round CAA tournament game against James Madison.
Tribe junior guard Quinn McDowell has 15 points and is 5-for-5 from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range.
