College coaches looking for more than stats from recruits
February 10, 2008
DEAR CAL // We're starting to fill out college baseball recruiting questionnaires for our son, who's a great contact hit- ter who rarely strikes out. However, last year he went through a streak during which he was hitting the ball, but right at the other team. It really affected his batting average. On the questionnaires, there's no place to indicate how few times he struck out. Do you think I should contact the coaches to explain that? It doesn't seem that the average tells the whole story.

Forget about 'five-tools' talk and build on baseball basics
January 27, 2008
DEAR CAL // I hear lots about "five-tool players" - those who can hit, hit for power, run, catch and throw. Of the five tools, which one do you feel is the most important and which one is most likely to gain the attention of coaches and scouts?

Quality of wood bats not to blame for lack of resounding crack sound
January 20, 2008
DEAR CAL // Last summer, my son's team participated in a wood bat tournament. It was the first time he'd hit with a wood bat and the first time outside a major league game I've watched a game played with wood bats in a long time. I was amazed at how dead the sound of the bat hitting the ball was. It wasn't the familiar crack sound I expected. Is the wood that much worse these days, or was it the ball, or am I just imagining this?

For parents, time with children best spent on fun, not lessons
January 13, 2008
DEAR CAL // I've been trying to give my 10-year-old daughter some basketball pointers. She won't listen to me, but if the coach tells her the same thing, she hangs on her every word. Am I doing something wrong?

Coaches/parents walk fine line
January 28, 2007
DEAR CAL // I am a varsity baseball coach who is starting to work with our Little League program. I don't have any children yet, but wonder if you had some advice for the parents I will be working with on how to successfully coach their own child and still make sports fun. How do they draw the line between coaching and parenting? It must be tough to get in the car after a game and stop coaching and return to parenting.
