Duke extends John Danowski's contract through 2018
The contract of Duke men's lacrosse coach John Danowski has been extended through the 2018 season. Last month, Danowski guided the Blue Devils to the 2013 NCAA championship with a 16-10 victory over Syracuse in the title game. In seven seasons at Duke, Danowski has guided the Blue Devils to a 111-31 (.782) record with two NCAA titles, six Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championships and four ACC tournament crowns. The 111-victory record is a national best during the seven-year stretch.
College baseball: Towson senior catcher Andrew Parker (Cardinal Gibbons) and junior designated hitter Kurt Wertz have been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-East first team. In addition, junior right fielder Dominic Fratantuono (Cardinal Gibbons) was named to the second team.
College wrestling: Maryland head assistant coach Todd Beckerman was named head coach at Brown.
Major Indoor Soccer League: The MISL has awarded a franchise to St. Louis, which will begin play in the 2013-14 season. Ownership and arena details about the St. Louis Ambush will be announced Tuesday.
Women's tennis: Peggy Porter of Dallas upset fourth-seeded Lena Litvak of Brooklyn, N.Y., 6-4, 6-1, to reach the semifinals of the ResortQuest Pro Women's Open at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach, Del. She'll face top seed Jessica Moore, 22, of Australia today. Second seed Brooke Austin, 17, of Indianapolis will play Brianna Morgan of Beverly Hills, Calif.
Women's soccer: The Washington Spirit returns to the Maryland SoccerPlex today to host the Western New York Flash for its first home match since May 11. The Spirit (1-4-3) has played three straight road matches, going 1-2.
Men's soccer: D.C. United and midfielder Raphael Augusto announced that they have mutually agreed to terminate his contract. The Washington Post reported that midfielder Chris Pontius is out indefinitely with a concussion suffered in the first half of a U.S. Open Cup match Wednesday.
