Midfielders Ben Hunt (Severna Park) and Matt Mackrides had four points apiece as the Chesapeake Bayhawks blew out the host Hamilton Nationals, 17-10, in Major League Lacrosse on Saturday night.
Hunt's three goals included a 2-pointer, while Mackrides got three goals and an assist. Midfielder Steven Brooks and attackman Drew Westervelt (UMBC, John Carroll) also had hat tricks in the win.
Kip Turner (Severn) made 13 saves for the Bayhawks (5-4), who ended a two-game slide.
"When you are unselfish and share the ball, everyone gets involved and you have the type of balanced scoring we did tonight," Chesapeake coach Dave Cottle said.
Midfielder Matt Abbott scored two goals and had five ground balls for Chesapeake, which broke open a close game in the second quarter. Midfielder Michael Kimmel (Johns Hopkins, Loyola High) and attackman John Grant Jr. contributed two assists for the Bayhawks, who outshot the Nationals 57-37 and had a 37-27 advantage in ground balls.
"I thought the difference between this game and our first meeting with Hamilton had to do with picking the ball up on the defensive end," Cottle said. "We did a great job of getting the ball off the ground and running from defense to offense."
The score was tied at 3 early in the second period when Chesapeake took control. Westervelt scored on a power play, starting a 7-0 run that gave the visitors a 10-3 lead at halftime. The spurt included a transition goal by close defenseman Nicky Polanco off an assist from short-stick defensive midfielder Dan Burns (Maryland, Severna Park).
Mackrides totaled two goals and an assist in the third quarter as the Bayhawks outscored the Nationals 6-3 to take their largest lead at 16-6. Defenseman Barney Ehrmann (Gilman) provided tight man-to-man coverage and scooped six ground balls.
Simon and Polanco combined to cover midfielder Kevin Crowley, who came into the game leading MLL in scoring (36points). Crowley, who has averaged three goals per game, was held to one.
"[I] thought our defense was outstanding. Hamilton really didn't do much against us in six-on-six situations," Cottle said.
