Haus loses job as coach of Tar Heels men after 8 years
North Carolina men's lacrosse coach John Haus has been relieved of his duties and will not return next season, the school announced yesterday.
"John and I have had several discussions in the days since the season ended, and the result of those talks is that we agree a change is in the best interest of reaching the goals we all have for Carolina lacrosse," athletic director Dick Baddour said in a release posted on the school's Web site.
"John has spent the past eight years giving everything he had to our program," Baddour said. "I have a great deal of respect for him as we arrive at this decision. John and his family love Chapel Hill and the university, and it is regrettable a change had to happen. We are thankful to him for all he has given to his alma mater."
Haus, a Loyola High graduate who coached Johns Hopkins for two seasons (1999-2000), guided the Tar Heels to a 58-52 record in his eight years with the team, three NCAA tournament berths - including the past two years - and two quarterfinal appearances.
But North Carolina failed to win an Atlantic Coast Conference game for the fourth consecutive year, and the program - which has captured four national championships - has not advanced past the NCAA quarterfinals since 1993.
"I am disappointed to no longer be coaching at Carolina," Haus said in the release. "We have built a solid foundation for future success, but this is the best way for the program to take that next step, and I wish my successor the best in doing that.
"My family and I have really enjoyed the eight years we have spent in Chapel Hill. It was a great honor to coach here. I wish the young men who played for me nothing but the best."
According to Inside Lacrosse, which first reported the coaching move, two possible candidates for the vacancy are UMBC coach Don Zimmerman and Ohio State coach Joe Breschi.
