Phelps finishes third in 100-meter freestyle

Michael Phelps of Rodgers Forge finished third in the 100-meter freestyle at the Santa Clara (Calif.) Grand Prix meet. Phelps, who won six gold medals at the Athens Olympics, finished in 50.15 seconds, behind winner Jason Lezak (49.54) and Canadian Brent Hayden (49.94). Phelps won the 200 individual medley in 1 minute, 59.31 seconds, giving him three victories in four events. He also won the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle.

Mystics' 3-game streak stopped by Monarchs

DeMya Walker scored a season-high 24 points to help the visiting Sacramento Monarchs end the Washington Mystics' three-game winning streak with a 62-57 WNBA victory. Walker shot 11-for-13 from the field and had seven rebounds for the Monarchs. Alana Beard led Washington with 15 points.

Shock 79, Sparks 73: Deanna Nolan had 22 points to help Detroit pull off the biggest comeback in WNBA history, rebounding from a 25-point deficit to beat visiting Los Angeles.

NBA attendance: The San Antonio Spurs' victory over the Detroit Pistons in seven games in the NBA Finals drew a championship series-record 141,416 fans and helped the league set a record for total attendance in a season. The league brought in 22,935,057 fans during the regular season and the playoffs, breaking the record of 21,855,125 set last year. The average attendance figure of 17,454 was also a record, topping the 17,341 mark from 1995-96.

Argentina advances to Confederations final

Argentina beat Mexico, 6-5, on penalty kicks in Hanover, Germany, setting up a showdown for the Confederations Cup title with rival and World Cup champion Brazil. The title game between the South American powers will be Wednesday in Frankfurt.

U.S. women: Lori Chalupny and Christie Welsh scored first-half goals and the Americans beat Canada, 2-0, in an exhibition in Virginia Beach, Va.

Armstrong has 'silly crash' on bike

Cyclist Lance Armstrong said that he had "a silly crash" on his bicycle Wednesday. Preparing for his last Tour de France, Armstrong crashed on a training run in Nice, France. He suffered a cut over the right eye, a black eye and scrapes on his hands and knees. He said that he is fine now. The tour will begin Saturday.

Olympics: The slogan for the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be "One World, One Dream." The slogan was chosen from 210,000 proposals in Chinese, French, Spanish, Portuguese and other languages, Liu Qi, president of Beijing's Olympic organizing committee, said.

Beach volleyball: Brazil's Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes won the world championship in Berlin in their first season playing together, defeating Switzerland's Sascha Heyer and Paul Laciga, 22-20, 21-12.

Sailing: Italy's Luna Rossa Challenge won the Louis Vuitton Act 5 fleet-racing regatta in Valencia, Spain, after Sweden's Victory Challenge was disqualified from an earlier race on a technical issue.
