'Water Cube' gets Phelps' thumbs up
Michael Phelps said he and U.S. swim teammate Katie Hoff of Towson left inspired after a visit to the futuristic "Water Cube" swimming venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. "We went and saw it yesterday and it's definitely pretty cool," Phelps, who is from Rodgers Forge, said. "I think it's going to paint a picture for Katie and me in our minds too, to really help us prepare for next year and get us more and more excited," he said.

Greece plans to put cameras in place
The Greek government plans to install surveillance cameras at all national soccer and basketball stadiums by the start of next season to combat fan violence. The measures were announced during a two-week ban on all professional team sports after a fan was killed in March 29 clashes.

Tyson gets court date for drug charge
Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson appeared in court in Mesa, Ariz., and was given an Aug. 20 trial date on charges of drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs. His attorney, Richard Schonfeld said Tyson, 40, has been sober for 72 days.

U.S., Sweden to play at Scandinavium
Sweden will play the United States in the Davis Cup semifinals at the Scandinavium Arena in Goteborg, Sweden, on Sept. 21-23. The surface has not yet been selected.

• WTA Family Circle Cup // Venus Williams advanced to the the quarterfinals in Charleston, S.C., with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Chan Yung-Jan of China.

• ATP U.S. Clay Court // James Blake overcame some early struggles to beat fellow American Alex Kuznetsov, 7-6 (4), 6-1, in the second round in Houston.

Greene to play
in Jordan Classic
Towson Catholic's Donte Greene, who is headed for Syracuse next season, will play in the April 21 Jordan Brand All-American Classic at New York's Madison Square Garden.

• Cycling // Jens Voigt of Germany won the fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country in Lekunberri, Spain, after breaking away early. Angel Vicioso of Spain leads the overall standings.

• Basketball // John Wooden will remain hospitalized at least one more day because of an elevated heart rate, the former UCLA basketball coach's daughter said. Wooden was hospitalized when he had symptoms of diverticulitis, an inflammation of pockets in the colon.

• Running // McDonogh wrestler Ben Levin will run in this weekend's Charlottesville (Va.) Marathon in honor of the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, which benefits U.S. Marines recovering and rehabilitating from injuries. For information on how to sponsor Levin, call 410-523-0991 or 410-960-0014.
