'Brown' has first workout since Belmont
In his first workout since running last in the Belmont Stakes last month, Big Brown went five-eighths of a mile in a slow 1 minute, 6.71 seconds at Aqueduct in New York.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner hit the track about 5:45 a.m. with regular exercise rider Michelle Nevin aboard. Trainer Rick Dutrow said the 3-year-old colt's feet, including the cracked hoof patched the day before the Belmont, are in fine shape.
• NHL // The Pittsburgh Penguins signed Evgeni Malkin, a finalist for the Most Valuable Player award, to a five-year extension worth $43.5 million, a deal that will retain him until 2013-14. It equals the deal signed last year by teammate Sidney Crosby. ... High-scoring wing Marian Hossa declined to re-sign with the Penguins, instead accepting a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings worth, according to an NHL source speaking to the Associated Press, $7.45 million. ... The Columbus Blue Jackets traded offensive standout Nikolai Zherdev and center Dan Fritsche to the New York Rangers for defensemen Christian Backman and Fedor Tyutin. The Blue Jackets also signed Kristian Huselius, formerly of the Calgary Flames, to a four-year, $19 million contract.
• Olympics // Former track star Tim Montgomery, who had pleaded not guilty to heroin distribution charges, has opted for a plea hearing in connection with those charges today in federal court in Richmond, Va. Montgomery had been scheduled for trial next week on those drug-related charges. ... Construction on part of the foundations of the London 2012 Olympic stadium has been temporarily halted after asbestos was found on the site.
• Colleges // Tennessee signed football coach Phillip Fulmer and men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl to deals that will keep them retained through 2014. Fulmer's deal is worth an average of nearly $3 million annually. Pearl's deal increases his salary by an average of a million dollars a year to $2.3 million annually. ... Georgia baseball coach David Perno, who led the Bulldogs to the College World Series finals, agreed to a five-year, $2.25 million deal. ... Indiana will give up two men's basketball scholarships for 2008-09 in anticipation of penalties related to the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate, a school official confirmed. ... Brandon Dillard, a redshirt junior wide receiver at Virginia Tech, ruptured his right Achilles' tendon and will miss the season. ... Georgia defensive end Michael Lemon has been charged with a felony stemming from a fight last weekend that injured a school student. ... Former UMBC women's soccer player Mary Hearin has been named assistant coach for the Retrievers.
• NFL // Retired quarterback Brett Favre responded to an ESPN report about a possible return to play for the Green Bay Packers this season by telling the Biloxi Sun Herald, "It's all rumor." The paper reported that Favre sent a text message saying there's "no reason" for a media frenzy. ... Former San Diego Chargers linebacker Steve Foley settled his lawsuit against an off-duty police officer who shot him two years ago and ended his pro career. Financial terms are confidential.
