Towson's Hoff sharp at U.S. Open

Olympian Katie Hoff of Towson began the 2005 U.S. Open in Auburn, Ala., with two solid swims Thursday and then continued her success yesterday. On Thursday, she set the U.S. Open meet record in the 200-meter individual medley in the morning preliminaries, with a time of 2 minutes, 13.67 seconds. Nine hours later, she shattered that mark in the finals. Her time of 2:11.90 was 66-hundredths off the U.S. Open record she set earlier this year and about 1 1/2 seconds off the American record she set at the world championships in July. "I haven't swum a long course meet since worlds, so I just wanted to see where I was," Hoff said. Hoff outdistanced Ariana Kukors (2:15.76) by almost four seconds. Hoff's North Baltimore Aquatic Club teammate Courtney Kalisz was third in 2:16.26. Yesterday, Hoff earned wins in the women's 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. She stayed in control for most of the way in the 200 free, but had to hold off Amanda Weir and Emily Kukors.

Md. School for Deaf U.S. football champ

The Maryland School for the Deaf has won its third straight national football championship, edging the California School for the Deaf, Riverside, in a decision by two groups representing hearing-impaired prep schools. The Orioles ended their season at 9-1 despite losing nine of last year's starters, coach Andy Bonheyo said. The Orioles' only loss came Sept. 23 at home against Avalon, which won, 30-28, in overtime, ending MSD's 27-game winning streak.

Portland, UCLA win women's semifinals

Christine Sinclair beat Penn State goalkeeper Erin McLeod on the final penalty kick in College Station, Texas, sending Portland to the title game at the NCAA Women's College Cup. Portland (23-0-1), playing in its eighth College Cup, will go for its second national title tomorrow against UCLA, which got two goals from Christina DiMartino in a 4-0 victory over Florida State.

Rahlves nips Miller in downhill

Daron Rahlves edged Bode Miller in a World Cup downhill for a 1-2 U.S. finish, reversing their order from last year on the same mountain in Beaver Creek, Colo. This time, Rahlves covered the Birds of Prey course - shortened because of wind and fog - in 1 minute, 13.37 seconds. Two skiers later, Miller came down in 1:13.64.

Women // Elena Fanchini, 20, of Italy won her first World Cup title, capturing the inaugural women's downhill of the season in 1 minute, 49.33 seconds in frigid Lake Louise, Alberta.

Davis Cup final
is tied at 1-1

Davis Cup finalists for the first time, Croatia and host Slovakia are 1-1 after opening singles matches in Bratislava. Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia defeated Mario Ancic, 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4, to even the tie after Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic beat surprise starter Karol Kucera, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Stewart sets mark
for NASCAR earnings

Tony Stewart's best year in NASCAR's Nextel Cup series reached the bottom line yesterday, with the two-time champion setting a record for single-season earnings. He picked up $6,173,633 from the points fund set up by series sponsor Nextel and NASCAR, and added $517,000 in contingency awards from sponsors. Combined with the prize money earned during the 36-race season, Stewart's total of $13,578,168 breaks the previous mark of $10,979,757 by Jeff Gordon in 2001.

UM women reach
NCAA second round

Rachel Wagener led the Maryland women with 16 kills and 12 blocks last night as the Terps (28-4) defeated Kentucky, 3-1 (25-30, 30-26, 30-24, 30-23), in Louisville, Ky., to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in school history.
