Baron Davis shocked the Golden State Warriors by opting out of his contract Monday. Imagine their surprise now.

ESPN.com, citing NBA front office sources, reported last night that the guard reached a verbal agreement with the Clippers and will sign a multiyear contract with Los Angeles after the league's moratorium on signings and trades is lifted next Wednesday.

Sources told ESPN.com that Davis, 29, will receive a five-year deal worth an estimated $65 million.

Forwards Elton Brand and Corey Maggette also opted out of their contract with the Clippers on Monday, and speculation began that the team would try to keep Brand and sign Davis.

• More pro basketball // The NBA hired Army Maj. Gen. Ronald L. Johnson as senior vice president of referee operations, a new position. ... Chris Paul's agent, Lance Young, plans to complete a contract extension for the Hornets guard today. ... Spurs guard Brent Barry opted out of his contract. ... Ticha Penicheiro had 17 points and eight assists, helping the host Sacramento Monarchs (8-8) hold off the Washington Mystics, 87-81, in a WNBA game. Alana Beard scored 31 points for the Mystics (6-10).

• NHL // The Capitals re-signed defenseman Mike Green to a four-year, $21 million contract and added free-agent goaltender Jose Theodore with a two-year, $9 million deal after they were unable to reach an agreement with Cristobal Huet, who instead signed a four-year, $22.5 million deal with the Blackhawks. ... The Lightning signed goaltender Olie Kolzig, 38, who has spent his entire career with the Capitals.

• NFL // Hamilton County (Ohio) Municipal Judge Richard Bernat declared a mistrial in the assault case of former Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry after an eight-person jury was unable to agree on a verdict. ... The Patriots released defensive back Willie Andrews, one day after he was arrested for allegedly pointing a handgun at his girlfriend's head.

• Et cetera // Owner Chip Ganassi shut down Dario Franchitti's NASCAR team because of a lack of sponsorship. ... Defender Marc Burch scored twice and D.C. United beat the second-tier Rochester Rhinos, 2-0, in Gaithersburg in the U.S. Open Cup.
