Carroll returns to Duke for a fifth year of eligibility while pursuing an MBA after spending 2007-2012 in the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment of the U.S. Army. He was a first-team USILA All-American in 2007 and an honorable mention All-American in 2005.

"It's an exciting game to watch and play, and it's going to continue to grow in all corners of this country," Carroll told Businessweek in May. "But we need to trust one another, we need to grow the sport with teamwork, and we have to make sure that we do it by holding ourselves to the highest standards possible."
