Kansas State first baseman Shane Conlon was taken by the Kansas City Royals in the 21st round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft with the 624th overall pick Saturday.

Conlon is the third Wildcat selected in this year’s draft, joining Jared King (fifth round; New York Mets) and Ross Kivett (10th round; Cleveland), each of which were drafted for the first time in their careers. In Brad Hill’s 10 seasons as the head coach at Kansas State, the Wildcats have produced 27 drafted picks that were undrafted out of high school.

A product of Naperville, Ill., Conlon is the first K-State player drafted by the Royals since Yancy Ayers in 1998 and the 11th in school history.

Conlon, a First Team All-Big 12 performer and member of the NCAA Manhattan All-Regional team, enters Saturday’s Super Regional at Oregon State hitting .350 with 12 doubles, three triples, a team-leading seven home runs and 28 RBI. He ranks in the top 10 of the Big 12 in nine offensive categories, including a tie for first in runs scored (55), a second-place mark in total bases (121) and fourth-place rankings in both hits (82) and home runs.

The redshirt sophomore ranks second on the team in steals (17), hit-by-pitch (16) and on-base percentage (.424). An outstanding defensive first baseman, Conlon has just three errors this year to carry a .993 fielding percentage.

In addition to Conlon, K-State signee Jordan Floyd, a left-handed pitcher from Shawnee Heights High School in Tecumseh, Kan., was also taken Saturday in the 25th round (No. 764) by the New York Yankees.

No. 13 Kansas State faces No. 3 national seed Oregon State in a best-of-three series in the Corvallis Super Regional, Saturday through Monday, at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore. The series begins with a 6 p.m. (CT) contest Saturday, and continues at 9 p.m. (CT) Sunday. If necessary, a decisive third game will be played at 6 p.m. (CT) Monday. All three games will be shown on ESPNU and can be heard on both the K-State Sports Network and www.k-statesports.com.
