Sports talk radio host Dan Sileo has been fired by WMEN (640-AM) Monday after the former Miami Hurricane tweeted over the weekend that he was placing a $1,000 bounty on Florida State defensive lineman Timmy Jernigan.
Sileo tweeted that he would pay $1,000 to any Miami player that "TAKES THIS KID OUT" while attaching a photo of Jernigan using his hands to create "The U".
Sileo deleted the tweet, and claimed that he was only joking, but WMEN terminated his contract with the station Monday.
The firing is Sileo's second this year and third in the past 20 months.
Sileo was fired from WQAM-560 AM in March after he made headlines for tweeting sexist comments at Fox Sports broadcaster Erin Andrews, among other on-air and Twitter meltdowns.
Sileo was fired from Tampa's WDAE-AM in March 2012 after he called three black NFL free agents "monkeys."
Sileo was a member of Miami's 1986 team that lost to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl.
The now ex-host took to Twitter again Monday afternoon, sending a series of tweets that read:
"Let me start this TWEET by saying I am SHOCKED over the BACKLASH over a TWEET I made concerning an FSU player over the WEEKEND...It has been GREAT being at 640..BUT at this time it is BEST I part ways with 640..I offered 3 times on SUNDAY to resign..BUT..all the backlash..its NOT good for BOTH parties....My family has DEATH THREATS from some @FSU_Football FANS and I even kept my daughter home from school today. VERY SAD society we live in..when somebody ACTUALY [sic] thinks I would want another kid hurt..AWFUL....BUT..DEATH THREATS ARE REAL."
"I understand my comment was OVER the TOP and 640 is right to protect there station...GREAT SUCCESS to them...But I felt the FSU PLAYER was PUSHING the U sign in my schools face...VERY disappointing to know the University of Miami lead the charge in this!! a school I BLEED for and WON for..I am TREATED LIKE A DOG by them..JUST like the MIRAS they have [EXPLETIVE] ON."
"My family and I are in hidding..PLEASE RESPECT our PRIVACEY [sic]....I have hired a PRIVATE COP and He is ARMED..THANK U..GO CANES"
WMEN sent out a statement Monday afternoon:
"As a result of Dan Sileo's action on his personal twitter account on November 3, 2013, 640 WMEN has terminated his independent contractor relationship with the station. The ownership, staff and management of WMEN-640 do not condone his actions which have no place in sports."Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
