It's never over until it's over. Arkansas and Illinois rallied from double-digit deficits for exciting wins over Texas A&M and Northwestern, respectively. Navy and TCU also had big rallies but fell short in overtime.
The Luke Fickell Era may be a footnote in Ohio State history. At 3-2 and with an offense that looks like it couldn't score against a JV squad, the Buckeyes have plenty of problems. Throw in games against Nebraska, Illinois and Wisconsin this month and that could spell trouble for the first-year coach.
You would think a service academy team would know a thing or two about discipline. Navy quarterback Kriss Proctor's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in overtime cost the Midshipmen a chance at a miraculous comeback over Air Force and a shot at the Commander-in-Chief's trophy.
Clemson is for real. The Tigers have dispatched three ranked teams in as many weeks, and with only Georgia Tech and South Carolina standing in their way, they are in the driver's seat in the ACC Atlantic.
It's not how you start but how you finish. On consecutive weeks, Texas A&M built big leads at halftime only to watch them disappear, with the Aggies being outscored 52-12 in the second half. A&M is close to disappearing off the national radar.
The Big 12 should be considering SMU and TCU. Both schools have been rumored as possible expansion candidates for the Big 12, and their game Saturday was a thrilling 40-33 overtime win by SMU.
Don't count out Auburn. Everyone wanted to write the Tigers off after they lost Cam Newton and returned only six starters from last season, but a 4-1 start, 2-0 in the SEC, is making believers out of doubters.
Alabama is who we thought they were … Alabama. The Tide dominated Florida in typical Alabama fashion: a defense that held the Gators to 15 rushing yards and an offense that rushed for 225 yards. The Nov. 5 showdown with LSU could be for a spot in the SEC Championship and BCS title game.
Wisconsin should be considered national title contenders. Saturday's 48-17 win over Nebraska was impressive on many levels, and it showed that the Badgers are the team to beat in the Big Ten. With an easy schedule, Wisconsin could be undefeated going into December.
Andrew Luck is really, really good. The Stanford quarterback and Heisman Trophy contender is putting up great numbers but added an element to his game Saturday when he made an amazing one-handed catch of a 13-yard pass from Drew Terrell. The senior is already a lock for the No. 1 pick in next year's NFL draft.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
