Defensive battles just about settled

Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green said a few of the position battles that have been waged throughout preseason camp are close to being settled.

Green said senior Jimmy Britton would likely start at inside linebacker alongside Jordan Drake, but noted that sophomore Daniel Gonzales will see significant action as the backup to both. Green said he considers Gonzales a starter and assured the youngster would get plenty of repetitions during the season opener against Ohio State.

"We talk about all three of those guys as starters. Jordan is definitely one of those starters, and it will be Jimmy and Daniel at the other spot," Green said. "All those guys can play SAM or MIKE. We expect those three guys to get the majority of reps."

Sophomore William Tuider has narrowly edged senior Obi Uzoma for the starting job at the outside linebacker position known as Raider. Chris Johnson will start on the other side at Striker with Uzoma backing up both.

"Again, we consider Obi a starter. Obi was very productive a year ago, but William's had a very productive camp," Green said. "Tuider can play either Raider or Striker so expect to see him at both spots."

Kwazel Bertrand will remain at the Rover position, which means Navy is looking for a new starter at right cornerback. Green said junior Quincy Adams has beaten out classmate Myer Krah for the job.
