Morgan State, Howard football meet Saturday for 71st time

Morgan State (1-5, 1-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) @ Howard (3-3, 2-1)

When: Saturday, 1 p.m.

Site: Greene Stadium, Washington, D.C.

Radio: 88.9 FM

Series: Morgan State leads, 43-26-1

What’s at stake: Can the Bears win two in a row? They've captured 10 of the past 12 games in this longstanding series, including last year’s 28-24 last-minute victory — the first for then-interim coach Fred Farrier. But Howard has awakened under new coach Mike London, formerly Maryland’s defensive line coach.

Key matchup: Caylin Newton, brother of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam, has galvanized Howard’s offense. Newton has rushed for 479 yards and seven touchdowns and passed for 1,319 yards and seven scores. Morgan State’s defense will be hard-pressed to contain the 5-foot-11 quarterback who has Howard averaging 30 points and 450 yards a game.

Players to watch: Morgan State’s special teams. They’ve blocked three punts in the past two games and returned one for a touchdown.
