Navy agrees to play in 2012 Emerald Bowl

Navy has reached an agreement to play in the 2012 Emerald Bowl against a Pacific-10 opponent if the Midshipmen are bowl-eligible, athletic director Chet Gladchuk said Thursday. This will be the Mids' second trip to San Francisco for a bowl. In 2004, Navy defeated New Mexico, 34-19. Navy is committed to the Texas Bowl in 2009, the Poinsettia Bowl in 2010, the EagleBank Bowl in 2011, the Emerald Bowl in 2012 and the Bell Helicopter Armed Services Bowl in 2013.
Basketball: Maryland's Gary Williams, Oklahoma's Jeff Capel and LSU's Trent Johnson have been elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Soccer: Andrew Bulls (McDonogh) had two goals as host UMBC (4-0-0) emerged with a 3-1 win against Saint Francis (Pa.) in the first round of the Adidas Kick Off Classic. Levi Houapeu assisted on all three Retrievers goals. Goals by Mike Porcelli, David Jackson and Michael Rakoczy lifted Navy (2-1-0) to a 3-1 win over Mount St. Mary's (1-2-0) in the opener. ... Navy senior goalie and captain Beth Reed was named a Primetime Performer of the Week by Col legeSoccer360.com after making 19 saves and posting two shutouts against nationally ranked Dayton and Miami (Fla.).
College cross country: Salisbury junior Travis Boccher (Wilde Lake) was named the Capital Athletic Conference's men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
