ACC won't add 9th league game
Athletic directors of the Atlantic Coast Conference have decided to drop the possibility of adding a ninth conference game to the football schedule, according to several people who attended a closed-door meeting involving the league's football coaches and ADs, ESPN.com reported yesterday.
The discussion was held during the league's annual spring meetings in Amelia Island, Fla. After hearing from the coaches, who were concerned that an increase in away league games could hurt their chances of qualifying for bowls, the league's ADs ceased consideration of the idea.
"We listened to the coaches, and we've backed off the nine games," Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips said. "It's off the table for discussion."
Said Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe: "I think it's something that there's a lot of unknowns."
The athletic directors initially proposed the idea to help ease rising costs of scheduling nonconference games.
• West Virginia // Former coach Rich Rodriguez says in a deposition that Gov. Joe Manchin and three members of the university's board of governors pressured him into signing a new contract before the start of the 2007 season, even though it had a $4 million buyout clause he didn't want. The deposition was taken for West Virginia's lawsuit to recover the $4 million from Rodriguez, who quit in December to coach Michigan.
