Military Bowl gameday activities to include parade, tailgate party

The Military Bowl announced today that gameday festivities Dec. 27 will begin with a parade led by the Budweiser Clydesdales. The parade will travel through downtown Annapolis prior to the 2013 Military Bowl at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game kicks off at 2:30 p.m.

The bowl matches teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Conference USA. Maryland, which became bowl eligible with Saturday’s win over Virginia Tech, has been prominently mentioned as the possible ACC representative.

"Maryland makes a logical choice because of their geographical situation," bowl president and executive director Steve Beck told The Baltimore Sun this week. "We had a terrific experience with them the last time they were here [in 2010]. They have not played at [Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium] since 1965."

The parade will begin at City Dock at 11 a.m. and make its way up Main Street before eventually working its way to Rowe Boulevard and finishing on Taylor Avenue adjacent to the stadium. At Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, spectators can join the official tailgate party that also begins at 11 a.m. in the west or “Blue” parking lot. There is no admission cost to parade and tailgate. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the tailgate.

“What a way to kick off our first Military Bowl in Annapolis,” Beck said in a statement today. “We think the parade will be a terrific addition to our game day.”

In addition to the Clydesdales, the parade will feature bands, cheerleaders, mascots, color guards and other performers, as well as several recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor, given for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.

The teams chosen to play in the bowl will be announced Dec. 8, and the game will air nationally on ESPN. Tickets and parking can be purchased at or by calling 888-841-2787.
