Terrance West rushed for 206 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries Saturday, but the junior running back was unavailable late in the No. 7 Towson football team’s 32-31 loss to No. 21 Delaware at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
West, who has gained 474 yards and eight touchdowns on 86 carries in three meetings with the Blue Hens, appeared to injure his hand while being stopped for no gain on second-and-5 on the Tigers’ penultimate series of the game. He returned two plays later to run for 16 yards, but did not play again during the fourth quarter.
Coach Rob Ambrose confirmed that West, who left with Towson (8-2, 4-2 Colonial Athletic Association) protecting a 31-17 advantage, had been injured.
“He took a shot,” Ambrose said. “They didn’t tell me what it was, but it was enough that at that point in the game, we were up by enough scores in the game that he didn’t need to go back in. Or at least that was the thought process.”
West surpassed the 200-yard mark for the third time this season and the fifth time of his career. He had 118 yards and two touchdowns on 17 attempts in the first half.
“That kid’s a really good back,” Delaware coach Dave Brock said. “As hard as we tried to go get him, he made a lot of plays. It was a challenging night for the run defense. … They weren’t 8-1 by accident. They weren’t one of the leading rushing teams in the country by accident.”
The run-pass ratio leaned heavily toward the ground game, with the Tigers calling 50 rushing plays against 19 passing plays. The offense ran 11 and three, respectively, in the fourth quarter, which suited Ambrose just fine.
“It’s a little bit of us being ahead,” he said. “I’ll tell you that there’s a mentality when you’re three scores ahead. You don’t play pass, you don’t run it up on people. That’s [not] who we are. You saw their offense at the end of the game. If we keep running the ball and run it well, that offense doesn’t show up, and there’s no game. There’s nothing at the end of the game. So if you ask me, in hindsight — in very-fast-review hindsight — we didn’t run it enough. We didn’t run the clock enough.”
