Couple surprises highlight Towson football's release of first official depth chart

Towson released its first depth chart of the preseason Friday, and there were a couple notable surprises.

The first entails the free safety position. Junior Christian Carpenter, an Aberdeen native and graduate who was a first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection last season, is second on the depth chart.

Carpenter, who tied then-sophomore strong safety Donnell Lewis for the team lead in interceptions with four and ranked fourth in tackles with 98, has been leapfrogged by redshirt sophomore Jordan Mynatt. The Columbia native and Wilde Lake graduate missed the entire 2013 season with an unspecified injury.

Sophomore Amos Campbell has taken the early lead over sophomore Brady Stup for the right to succeed Doug Shaw as the starting center. As late as last week, Stup had been the leading candidate to anchor the middle of the offensive line.

Other highlights include:

** Junior quarterback Connor Frazier is listed ahead of redshirt senior Joe Brennan. Frazier, whose 1-yard touchdown run helped the Tigers defeat Eastern Washington in the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in December, has been taking a majority of the first-team reps.

** Sophomore Tanner Vallely is the starting tight end ahead of junior Sean Mooney. Vallely will be expected to replace James Oboh, who tied then-junior wide receiver Spencer Wilkins (Mount Hebron) for the team lead in touchdown catches with four last season.

** In addition to Campbell at center, the rest of the offensive line could consist of sophomore Shayne Sullivan at left tackle, redshirt freshman Antonio Harris at left guard, sophomore Sam Evans (Loyola Blakefield) at right guard, and junior Jake Schunke at right tackle. Of those five, only Evans and Schunke started at least one game last season.

** Junior Tungie Coker is listed ahead of redshirt freshman D’Sean Cummings at left defensive end. Coker could join a defensive front composed of senior Ryan Delaire at right defensive end, junior Jon Desir at nose tackle and senior Drew Cheripko at defensive tackle.

** Junior Walter Dunston will anchor the linebacking corps at the outside position, where he started 10 of 13 games last season in place of then-sophomore Bryton Barr (torn pectoral muscle). Senior Fred Overstreet and redshirt freshman James Simms (Reservoir) are listed as the starting inside linebackers.

** Sophomore Juleon Killikelly-Lee has the edge over redshirt freshman Alfonso Augustine to join senior Tye Smith as the starting cornerbacks. Killikelly-Lee, a Gwynn Oak native and Woodlawn graduate who made 11 tackles in 12 games (and one start) last year, would succeed Jordan Love.

** Junior Sam Hurwitz is the only kicker listed on the depth chart. Hurwitz is expected to replace Drew Evangelista and D.J. Soven, who combined to convert all seven of Towson’s field goals last season.

The depth chart is an early guide to the Tigers’ lineup and could change before they open the season Aug. 30 against Central Connecticut at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
