Quarterbacks Dan Persa and Chandler Harnish will receive the National Football Foundation’s Mental Toughness Award on Feb. 20 at Halas Hall.
Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald will introduce Persa, and Northern Illinois boss Dave Doeren will fete Harnish at the event, which is open to the public for $150/person. (Register at www.nffchicagoawards.eventbrite.com.)
Harnish, who suffered a serious knee injury in 2009, led the Huskies to the Mid-American Conference’s title game. After accounting for 34 touchdowns (23 passing, 11 rushing), the MAC gave him the Vern Smith Leadership Award, presented annually to the league’s top football player.
Persa overcame a ruptured Achilles’ tendon to lead the nation with a completion percentage of 74.3. He finished second in the Big Ten to Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson in passing efficiency.
Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany will receive the NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award during the Feb. 20 awards ceremony.
