UMBC's Cassidy makes All-America East team

UMBC sophomore guard Carlee Cassidy was named to the All-America East first team yesterday.

Cassidy, the first Retriever to be selected to the first team in UMBC's five years in the conference, also garnered All-Academic recognition. She ranked second in the conference with 17.0 points per game and had a 3.09 grade point average.

Retrievers senior guard Kristin Drabyn (11.6 ppg.) was selected to the third team. Freshman forward Meghan Colabella (4.9 ppg., 3.7 rpg.) earned All-Rookie Team honors, another first for UMBC.

• Figure skating // Two-time U.S. figure skating champion Evan Lysacek withdrew from next week's world championships after hurting his left arm in a fall during practice. Lysacek's right skate blade broke on the landing of a triple axel Wednesday, and the fall injured his left forearm, elbow and shoulder. No bones were broken, but he's wearing a soft cast and will be in a sling for about a week. Former U.S. junior champ Jeremy Abbott will replace Lysacek at worlds.

• Soccer // D.C. United, Chivas USA, Houston and New England will be joined by Mexican clubs Atlante, Chivas Guadalajara, Santos Laguna and Pachuca in the second SuperLiga tournament. The tournament will be played from July 12 to Aug. 5, Soccer United Marketing said. D.C. United, Houston, Atlante and Chivas Guadalajara will be in Group A, with the others in Group B. United will play all of its opening-round games at home.

• More soccer // Freddy Adu scored on a penalty kick in the 41st minute to help the United States' under-23 team beat Panama, 1-0, in the second round of Group A pool play in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying in Tampa, Fla. The Americans improved to 1-0-1, while Panama dropped to 0-2. The top two teams in the group will advance to the Thursday's semifinals in Nashville, Tenn., along with the top two from Group B. The finalists will earn spots in the Beijing Olympics.

• Hockey // Canucks defenseman Mattias Ohlund will miss the rest of the regular season after having surgery to remove bone chips from his left knee. Ohlund leads Canucks defensemen with 24 points in 53 games. ... Blackhawks forward Martin Havlat had surgery on his left shoulder and should be ready for next season's training camp in September, the team said. ... The NHL suspended Penguins forward Georges Laraque for three games, one day after he injured Buffalo defenseman Nathan Paetsch with an elbow to the head. Paetsch is out indefinitely with a concussion, leaving the Sabres' depleted defense down a third player in the midst of their playoff push.
