Sean Schimmel has been selected as coach of the Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving program, athletic director Deborah Yow said yesterday.
Schimmel comes to College Park after serving as the associate head coach for two years at LSU and for seven years as an assistant at Harvard. He has coached 43 All-Americans, first team and honorable mention.
Schimmel was a prep All-American at Ridgewood (N.J.) High School and swam at Southern California from 1987 to 1991.
• Tennis // Roger Federer's first match at the ATP Rome Masters will come against Guillermo Canas, who beat Italian wild card Gianluca Naso, 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-2, on clay. Federer had a first-round bye. Canas is 3-2 against Federer. No. 9 seed Richard Gasquet lost to Peruvian qualifier Luis Horna, 6-4, 6-1.
• Track and field // Salane Flanagan broke the American record in the 10,000 meters by 17 seconds Sunday in Palo Alto, Calif., taking the title at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in 30 minutes, 34.49 seconds. ... A judge in Norfolk, Va., postponed a bond hearing for former track star Tim Montgomery on federal heroin distribution charges.
• College baseball // Georgia Tech pitcher Michael Hutts, 21, died last month from an accidental drug overdose, the medical examiner's office in Atlanta said, but it hasn't been determined if heroin was involved.
