State basketball roundup (Jan. 22): Carr, Kendley help Morgan men end skid

Phillip Carr had 13 points and 12 rebounds, Tiwian Kendley added 13 points and the Morgan State men's basketball team beat Delaware State, 61-47, on Monday night for the Hornets' 16th straight loss.

Kendley's fastbreak windmill dunk extended the Bears' lead to 36-27 with 15:52 to go.

Kyson Rawls hit an open 3-pointer from the wing in transition to give Morgan State a 48-34 advantage and he added a 3 from the corner at the end of the shot clock to make it 59-41 with three-plus minutes left.

Rawls made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points for the Bears (8-12, 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), who ended a three-game skid.

Johquin Wiley scored 11 points for Delaware State (2-20, 0-7) in the 97th series meeting. The Hornets were just 16-for-53 shooting (30.2 percent), including 3-for-15 from 3-point range.

North Carolina Central 63, UMES 60: Reggie Gardner Jr. scored 19 points, including four 3-pointers, and Raasean Davis added 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting to help the visiting Eagles slip past the Hawks.

Freshman Jordan Perkins had nine points, six rebounds and nine assists for N.C. Central (11-9, 5-1 MEAC). The Eagles have won 12 in a row against UMES (5-17, 1-5).

Gardner hit a 3 and Larry McKnight Jr. made two free throws to give the Eagles a 59-55 lead with two minutes to play. Logan McIntosh connected with Miryne Thomas for an alley-oop dunk that pulled the Hawks within two points but Pablo Rivas answered with a layup that made it 61-57 with 49 seconds remaining. Perkins and Gardner each made one of two free throws from there to seal it.

McIntosh led UMES with a career-high 26 points on 8-for-12 shooting. Thomas added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Cameron Bacote scored 11 points.

The Hawks, who made just 20 of 68 field-goal attempts, have lost five in a row. N.C. Central shot 60 percent (12-for-12) in the second half and finished with 20 assists on 22 field goals.

Women

UMES 84, North Carolina Central 73: Bairesha Gill-Miles had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the host UMES women's basketball team (5-14, 2-5 MEAC) to an 84-73 victory over North Carolina Central (5-14, 3-3) on Monday night.

Keyera Eaton added 14 points and eight rebounds and Ciani Byrom and Ra'JeanMartin each added nine points for UMES.

Delaware State 62, Morgan State 54: Lanayjha Ashe scored 17 points to help the visiting Hornets (3-17, 2-5 MEAC) beat the Bears (10-10, 3-4).

Tykyrah Williams had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Morgan State, which lost its fourth straight game.

Robert Morris 77, Mount St. Mary's 68: Megan Smith had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the visiting Colonials (14-4, 7-0 Northeast Conference) over the Mountaineers (6-13, 3-5).

Daly Sullivan scored 19 points off the bench and Ashlee White added 14 for Mount St. Mary's, which was outrebounded 43-24.
