Vasquez to remain with Terps
The Maryland basketball team has retained a key player but lost another who decided to transfer.
Point guard Greivis Vasquez, whose erratic play as a sophomore made him a lightning rod for both criticism and praise last season, will return to College Park for his junior year.
Freshman forward Shane Walker is leaving the program, coach Gary Williams announced yesterday. Maryland athletic officials said yesterday that as far as they know, Walker's future destination has not been determined.
An athletic department spokesman confirmed that Vasquez did not file early eligibility papers with the NBA.
Vasquez, who led the Atlantic Coast Conference in assists (6.8) and turnovers (4.4) and was Maryland's top scorer (17.0) in a 19-15 season, was not available to comment.
Walker (Montrose Christian) will finish the spring semester at Maryland and leave the program in good academic standing. He played in 24 games during the 2007-08 season, averaging 1 rebound and 0.5 of a point per game.
