Hansbrough returning to North Carolina
Forward Tyler Hansbrough, the Associated Press National Player of the Year, said yesterday that he will return for his senior year at North Carolina.
However, sophomores Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington will declare for the NBA draft, though they won't hire agents - leaving open the possibility of their return.
• More college basketball // Pittsburgh forward Sam Young, the Big East's Most Improved Player last season, said he will return for his senior year.
• Professional football // The Erie RiverRats (5-2) scored 37 points in the first half en route to a 49-17 victory over the Mariners (1-6) in an American Indoor Football Association game at 1st Mariner Arena. Quarterback Mike Orihel threw for a touchdown and ran for another for the Mariners.
• Tennis // Top-ranked Roger Federer rallied from a set down to defeat David Nalbandian, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, and advance to the semifinals of the ATP Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco. Three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal beat David Ferrer, 6-1, 7-5.
• Gymnastics // Morgan Hamm's petition to the U.S. championships was approved, keeping alive his quest to make a third Olympic squad. Hamm dropped out of a qualifying meet Wednesday, suffering from an allergic reaction. ... Georgia won its fourth straight NCAA women's title, in Athens, Ga.
