While Aussie artist Chris Edser slept half-a-world away, Chicago sports fans were abuzz Wednesday about his cartoon GIFs of Bulls center Joakim Noah. Edser released another GIF overnight on basketball art blog Ron Artist, this one of Jo swatting Lebron into oblivion.
The Tribune reached out to Edser on Twitter and he answered a few questions for us over email. It should be noted he stayed up late to do so ahead of his Easter holiday weekend.
Our chat, original post and his latest Noah GIF below:

Chicago Tribune: So, obviously you’re a basketball fan but you live in Australia. Do you root for Aussie teams? The Bulls? Both?
Edser: I've loved basketball ever since growing up in the nineties and I think Jordan's successful Bulls teams were a reason NBA games were televised here. Especially when they featured Aussie Luc Longley. Now there are more Australians playing significant minutes in the NBA than ever with Bogut, [Patty] Mills, [Aron] Baynes and [Matthew] Dellavedova all contributing. I support the Adelaide 36ers here and have supported the Blazers in the NBA since I was a kid for some reason, but as a basketball lover I've got to appreciate the current Bulls team and want to see them go far in the playoffs this year.
-Why’d you pick Jo Noah to GIFify?
I've drawn a lot of players for our Ron Artist Tumblr but Noah was the first I've animated. He's such a sincerely endearing person and likeable character. He's so unique in his style of play and as a personality, so it happened easily. I'm always scribbling while watching games on League Pass and he's always a favourite. I've animated James Harden in a music video for band "The Beards" dunking with his beard, but Noah was the first I did just out of my own interest.
-From what we saw on Twitter, it looks like you were asleep when all the hub-bub with Chicago newspapers and sports blogs picking these things up began because of the time difference. Did you wake up and just see it all at once?
Pretty much. Other NBA fans in Australia were telling me about the Reddit activity and it escalated from there.
-Your work traveled basically instantly half-way across the world and people seem to love it, Chicagoans especially. That’s gotta be pretty cool, right?
Absolutely. It was some fun to try some new animation and drawing techniques while I was relaxing and watching basketball, but I think the sense of enjoyment I was having came through and people really enjoyed watching them.
-Finally, playoffs start soon. NBA Finals: Who ya got?
You want me to say Chicago right??? Is Rose coming back in the second round? This season is tough. Miami are hard to gauge, but I think they'll get there again. OKC in the West perhaps? Durant v LeBron seems appropriate with all this MVP argument, but check out the next few Noah animations and you'll see who really wins.
The Bulls open the playoffs against Washington on Sunday. The Blackhawks' first playoff game is tonight. We got GIFs, international cooperation and an extra "U" in the word "favourite." What else could a sports fan ask for?
Original post from Wednesday:
He may be only an outside hopeful for MVP, but the Bulls' Joakim Noah can almost surely lay claim to the title of Best GIFed NBA Player.
Over at the basketball-inspired art blog Ron Artist, Australian artist Chris Edser put together a series of cartoon GIFs of the Bulls' big man. The animations play on Noah's on-court mannerisms: Defensive hustle, nails on a chalkboard-esque free-throw form and trademark coif of wavy hair.
The GIFs were getting plenty of discussion on the NBA Reddit page. We thought we'd share directly with our readers. As Joakim might say en Français, "Bravo, Chris. Encore."
