At Loyola Maryland's Ridley Athletic Complex
No. 4 Perry Hall (16-3) vs. No. 5 Meade (17-1)
What: Class 4A
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Outlook: One team will leave Loyola on Friday night with a first — a state championship. Meade makes its second title game appearance with its first coming in 1978. Perry Hall has been to the finals four times – most recently in 2008 – and has yet to come home with the big prize. The Mustangs, who have won have won 11 straight games, are in the midst of a record-breaking season with their 17 wins already six more than the program's previous high. Senior forward Sammy Dupuy's 15 goals and goalie Danny Castillo's 13 shutouts are both program records. Perry Hall has a quality one-two punch in seniors Colin Weyant (11 goals and nine assists) and Jack Muller (11 goals, three assists), but others have stepped up in big moments. In claiming the North region against Howard, freshman Juver Navarette scored the game's only goal in overtime and then Derek Staines sent the Gators to the state finals with a goal in another 1-0 win over Eleanor Roosevelt. Defense has played a big role as well. The Gators have posted nine shutouts and limited opponents to one goal or less in 18 of their 19 games. Containing Dupuy will be their primary concern on Friday. Meade advanced to the final after beating Montgomery Blair in penalty kicks on Saturday. The Mustangs only loss this season was a 4-2 setback against Anne Arundel County rival Broadneck, but they avenged the loss with a 3-2 win to claim the East region.
