Boswell leaving Seton Keough to become Stevenson women's basketball coach

Jackie Boswell, who kept Seton Keough among the region's most powerful high school girls basketball teams over the past 11 years, is taking over the women's basketball program at Stevenson.

Boswell, who was 238-81 in 11 seasons as head coach at Seton Keough, led the Gators to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A championship in 2009. In that year, the team won the ESPNRise National Invitational tournament championship and the prestigious Bishop Walsh tournament and finished ranked No. 12 in the ESPN Rise Girls Basketball rankings.

Seton Keough went 21-9 this past season, including a 12-4 mark in the IAAM A Conference. Boswell — who was also the softball coach and athletic director at the school — said the timing was right for her to move on when the Stevenson job came open and the Gators graduated six starters.

Still, it wasn’t easy to announce her departure.

“It was harder than I thought after being there for 14 years,” said Boswell, who was an assistant girls basketball coach for four seasons before taking over the head job. “I feel like I have a good rapport with the faculty and so it was really difficult. Last week, I met with my coaches on Wednesday night and I’ve had some of those same coaches for the entire time I’ve been there. Telling the girls on Thursday was really rough. A couple of the basketball players took it so hard that I almost turned around and said, ‘You know what? I’ll just stay,’ but they all are really happy for me.”

The Archbishop Spalding alum will officially take over the Stevenson’s program on a full-time basis July 7.

"We've done a lengthy and exhaustive national search for the head women's basketball coach," Stevenson Director of Athletics Brett Adams said in a statement. "I feel that we have the very best candidate, and it is unique because she is a local candidate. I've watched her coach IAAM championship games and she is a fantastic coach and a fantastic administrator. I think it is the perfect fit for Stevenson University to take us to the next level."
