Kristijan Krajina scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the host Mount St. Mary's men's basketball team to a 58-55 win over UMBC on Saturday. The Mountaineers improved to 3-0 at home this season with the victory.
The Mount used a 7-0 run early in the second half to take its biggest lead of the game, 39-31, with 14:30 remaining. Raven Barber capped the run with five consecutive points.
The Retrievers (2-11) answered with a 13-4 spurt to take its only lead of the second half, 44-43, on a Joey Getz layup. Mount St. Mary's (5-6) responded with 9-2 run of its own to grab a 52-46 advantage. Taylor Danaher started the run with a turnaround jumper, Rashad Whack hit a pair of free throws, Krajina a jumper in the lane, and Xavier Owens a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Mount the six-point lead.
UMBC did not go away, tying the score on a pair of free throws by Brett Roseboro with 1:35 left in the contest. On the next possession, Josh Castellanos was fouled, and he hit one of two at the line to put the Mount on top 54-53. After a stop, Krajina hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left to give the Mount a 56-53 lead. Krajina had been 1-for-10 at the foul line on the year before those free throws.
Ryan Cook (St. Vincent Pallotti) cut the Mount lead to 56-55 on a jumper with 12 seconds left, and Castellanos was fouled again with 10 seconds on the clock. The junior guard hit both free throws to put the Mount ahead 58-55. UMBC's Brian Neller had his game-tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer come up short.
Krajina was 6-for-10 from the field to post a team-high 14 points for the Mount. The junior center's eight boards also tied a career high.
Cook led UMBC with 12 points, while Roseboro added a double double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Arizona State 68, Coppin State 52: Troy Franklin, Michael Murray and Patrick Cole each scored 13 points, but Jahii Carson had 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to the host Sun Devils (11-2) past the Eagles (3-11) in Tempe.
Carson, who shot 6-for-12 from the floor, led four players in double figures in scoring for Arizona State. Jonathan Gilling added 14 points, while Carrick Felix and Evan Gordon each added 11 points.
Arizona State shot 47.2 percent from the field while limiting Coppin State to 33.3 percent shooting.
Coppin State also received five rebounds and four assists from sophomore Taariq Cephas. Murray led the Eagles with six rebounds and Patrick Cole added five.
Stevenson 90, Skidmore 79: Christian Roberts had 19 points to power the host Mustangs (6-4) past the Thoroughbreds (6-3).
Stevenson outscored Skidmore 41-36 in the second half to win.
Manhattanville 74, Frostburg State 58: The Valiants (7-4) used a late 21-5 scoring run to beat the Bobcats (4-8) at the Randolph-Macon Coaches Classic.
Frostburg's Christian Jackson had a game-high 32 points.
Randolph-Macon 76, Washington College 55: The host Yellow Jackets (5-5) never trailed and beat the Shoremen (0-10) in the semifinal round of the at the Randolph-Macon Coaches Classic.
McDaniel 70, Trinity (Conn.) 53: The visiting Green Terror (5-4) built a 17-point lead midway through the first half and went on to beat the Bantams (4-6) at the Trinity Invitational.
Randolph 70, Johns Hopkins 48: The Blue Jays (5-4) second-half rally fell short in the Bojangles Holiday Challenge. The Wildcats improved to 10-0.
St. Mary's 75, Swarthmore 56: Donn Hill scored a game-high 19 points to lead the host Seahawks (9-1) past the Garnet (3-7) in the opening round of the Seahawk Holiday Tournament.
