State women: Loyola puts clamps on Siena in second half

Greyhounds win third straight, 53-37; UMBC, Coppin, Navy also victorious

Loyola's stifling defense shut down Siena in the second half as the host Greyhounds (9-12, 4-6 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) cruised to their third straight victory, 53-37, Saturday.

After a closely contested first half, the Saints (8-13, 4-6) went scoreless for the first five minutes of the second and hit just three field goals in the entire half.

UMBC 86, Maine 79: The Retrievers (7-15, 3-6 America East) earned their first road win of the season led by Brittany Crowell's 22 points.

Hampton 81, Morgan State 60: Keiara Avant's career-high 32 points drove the host Pirates (17-5, 8-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) past the Bears (7-14, 3-5).

Coppin State 79, Norfolk State 49: The Eagles (9-13, 5-4 MEAC) took a 32-9 lead en route to beating the host Spartans (3-16, 1-7).

Leola Spotwood led Coppin State with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Navy 61, Bucknell 40: Kara Pollinger scored 16 as the host Mids (13-9, 6-1 Patriot League) rolled past the Bison (13-9, 4-3). The win keeps Navy in first place.

Sacred Heart 58, Mount St. Mary's 50: Jessie Kaufman led the Mount (8-12, 4-5 Northeast Conference) with 10 points in a losing effort to the visiting Pioneers (15-5, 8-1).

North Carolina A&T 67, UMES 55: The Hawks (5-12, 1-5 MEAC) dropped their fourth straight conference game to the visiting Aggies (13-7, 5-2).

Elizabeth City State 56, Bowie State 39: Jasmine Jacobs scored 10 as the host Bulldogs (6-13, 3-8 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) scored a season low in their loss to the Vikings (19-3, 11-1).

Johns Hopkins 59, Swarthmore 54, OT: Liz Tommasi scored 13 points as the host Blue Jays (13-9, 11-6 Centennial Conference) beat the Garnet (16-4, 12-3). Fatu Conteh made one of two free throws for Johns Hopkins to send the game to overtime.

Frostburg State 61, Wesley 58: The visiting Bobcats (6-15, 2-6 Capital Athletic Conference) defeated the Wolverines (3-17, 0-9) to halt a six-game losing streak after 16-point performances by guards Steph Straka and Ronje' James.

Haverford 50, McDaniel 46: Dominique Meeks scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the visiting Fords (13-7, 10-6 Centennial) held off a late push by the Green Terror (9-12, 6-10). Rachael Ryback scored 18 for McDaniel.

Widener 84, Hood 57: Vanessa Hejnas scored 19 points to fuel the Pride (17-4, 12-2 Centennial) past the visiting Blazers (5-16, 3-11).

Dickinson 56, Washington College 55: Belma Mekic scored 22 points, including the game-winning free throw, to lead the Red Devils (12-7, 8-8 Centennial) past the visiting Shorewomen (10-10, 8-8).

Kelly Mitchell led Washington with 16 points.

Lycoming 63, Stevenson 47: The host Mustangs (7-12, 4-10 Commonwealth Conference) lost to the Warriors (6-14, 6-8). Ruth Casadevall and Stephanie Martinez each scored 10 points for Stevenson.

Goucher 60, Merchant Marine 55: The Gophers (6-14, 2-8 Landmark Conference) made a late 9-0 run to beat the visiting Mariners (7-12, 1-10). Sharnell Huff scored 17 for Goucher.

York 72, Salisbury 50: The host Sea Gulls (10-10, 4-4 CAC) fell to the Spartans (17-5, 6-3). Anna Hackett led Salisbury with 20 points.
