Jesse Reed made a layup with a second left in overtime and host American beat UMBC, 63-61, Thursday night.
Eagles guard Darius Gardner, who played all 45 minutes, had 22 points, and guard John Schoof added 15 as American rallied at the end of regulation. Forward Kyle Kager had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles (1-1).
UMBC (1-2) was paced by Chase Plummer, who came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 12 rebounds.
Freshman guard Rodney Elliott (John Carroll), son of the former Maryland star of the same name, started for UMBC and had eight points and four assists. Guard Joey Getz also had eight points for the Retrievers.
San Diego 68, Morgan State 61: Johnny Dee scored 19 points to lead the visiting Toreros.
Dee, who scored his 1,000th point in the game, led four players in double figures for San Diego (3-0). Dennis Kramer had 12 points and seven rebounds. Christopher Anderson and Jito Kok scored 11 points each for the Toreros, who won despite shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from 3-point range.
Justin Black scored a game-high 22 points for Morgan State (0-3). Black was the only player in double figures for the Bears, who shot just 38.3 percent from the field, made five of 21 3-point attempts and converted only 10 of 21 free throws.
Iowa 109, UMES 63: Aaron White matched a career high with 22 points on 9-for-10 shooting for the host Hawkeyes.
Melsahn Basabe added 12 points and seven rebounds for Iowa (3-0).
Issac Smith III led UMES (1-2) with 19 points.
Hartford 59, Loyola 53: Nai Brown led the Greyhounds (0-2) with a career-high 14 points, but Loyola lost its home opener to the Hawks (1-1).
Hartford led by as many as 11 in the first half. Loyola kept the deficit in single digits in the second half but drew no closer than two.
