JayVaughn Pinkston, Darrun Hilliard and Josh Hart combined for 56 points on 72.7 percent shooting to lift host Villanova over Mount St. Mary's, 90-59, Wednesday night.
Pinkston, the leading returning scorer for the Wildcats (2-0), contributed a game-high 21 points, while Hilliard made eight of 10 shots en route to 18 points. Hart, a freshman guard from Washington, scored 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting and contributed 11 rebounds.
Julian Norfleet led Mount St. Mary's (0-2) with 15 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Sam Prescott chipped in 13 points and Rashad Whack added 10, although the trio combined to shoot just 11-for-37 from the field.
Navy 98, Goucher 47: The host Midshipmen (2-1) raced past the Gophers (0-1) early and never looked back.
Goucher was within 9-5 early, but a 22-4 run gave Navy a 31-9 lead and firm control. The Mids led 54-21 at halftime, thanks in part to a 30-13 edge on the boards.
The Midshipmen broke the 50-point barrier in a half for the first time since December 2012.
Guard Brandon Venturini led Navy with 16 points.
Forward Julian Livingston had nine points to lead the Gophers.
Bowie State 87, Cheyney (Pa.) 73: The visiting Bulldogs ended a two-game losing streak with their first win of the season.
Cameron Knox led the way with 23 points. Curtis DeShawn had 20 points for the Wolves (0-1).
Coppin State 78, UMBC 62: Freshman Sara Tarbert scored a game-high 23 points, but the Retrievers (1-1) lost to the host Eagles (2-1).
Coppin State opened with a 12-0 run and led by as many as 27 points in the first half. Ashle Craig finished with 20 points and Larrisa Carter had 18 for the Eagles. Tarbert has scored over 20 points in two consecutive games.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
