The host Navy men's basketball team blew a 12-point second-half lead but recovered to top American, 50-44, Wednesday night and earn its second conference win of the season.
The Midshipmen (8-19, 2-9 Patriot League) led 26-14 two minutes into the second half, but the Patriots came back to tie the game on a couple of occasions, the last time at 34 with 10:52 to play. But American (10-16, 5-6) never took the lead, and Navy went on a 7-0 run in the final three minutes.
Three players finished in double figures for the Midshipmen, who ended a seven-game losing streak. Brandon Venturini finished with 13 points, Tilman Dunbar had 12 and Thurgood Wynn 11. Navy hadn't won since beating Army, 59-50, on Jan. 20.
UMBC 52, Stony Brook 51: Kim Browning (10 points) made a layup for a 52-47 lead with 2:12 left in the game and the visiting Retrievers hung on to win.
Raven Harris finished with a game-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers for UMBC (10-16, 6-7 America East). The Seawolves fell to 13-14, 5-9.
Navy 52, American 42: Jade Geif scored 14 points for the visiting Mids (16-10, 9-2 Patriot), who pulled away from the Eagles (13-12, 6-5) by ending the game on an 11-1 run.
American had tied the game at 41 on a pull-up jumper from the foul line by freshman Ari Booth with 5:32 left to play.
Alix Membreno had 11 rebounds for the Mids.
Karona Roach ended the drought for UMES with a 3-pointer with 9:30 left in the first half.
Virginia State 80, Bowie State 42: The host Trojans (12-13, 5-10 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) outscored the Bulldogs (7-16, 4-11) 52-21 in the second half.
Johns Hopkins 64, Haverford 59: Jessica Brown made a 3-pointer with 4:50 left to put the Blue Jays ahead for good at 51-48 in a Centennial Conference quarterfinal against the Fords (15-10, 12-8).
Junior Fatu Conteh blocked a potential game tying 3-pointer, then made two free throws to ice the victory for Hopkins (16-10, 14-7), which will face host Gettysburg in Friday's semifinal at 6 p.m.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
