Jockey Julian Pimentel rode a pair of winners on the opening day card of the Pimlico Race Course spring meeting Thursday.
The 34-year-old, who has been a top-five state rider since arriving from New Jersey in 2006, placed first with He's Achance and Glich in front of an announced crowd of 3,283.
The 35-day spring meeting will feature live racing on a Thursday-through-Sunday schedule through June 7, including its signature race, the 139th Preakness on May 17.
Saturday's 10-race card will feature three stakes races: the $75,000 Mister Diz Stakes for 3-year-olds and up on the turf, the $75,000 Twixt Stakes for 3-year-old Maryland-bred fillies and the $100,000 Dahlia Stakes for fillies and mares on the grass.
Pimentel will ride Ben's Cat in the Mister Diz, which the gelding has won four consecutive times. The King Leatherbury homebred ranks eighth all-time on the Maryland-bred earnings list with $1,862,640.
Note: Laurel Park winter meet average wagering dropped 18.8 percent from 2013's winter meet figures. The winter meet concluded Saturday after 42 live racing days, eight fewer than the previous year. The average daily handle fell from $1.85million to $1.5 million.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
