Winter solstice hike
Dec. 22, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Gunpowder Falls State Park, 10500 Belair Road, Perry Hall. Celebrate the shortest day of the year with an evening hike guided by a park ranger. This three-mile rugged hike covers rough and varied terrain. Bring your own headlamp or flashlight and water. Dress appropriately. Pre-registration is required. Call: 410-592-2897. Donations welcome.
First Day Hikes
Jan. 1. All 50 state park systems will offer free, guided hikes so individuals and families can get the new year off on the right foot. For information, go to americasstateparks.org/first-day-hikes.

Md. Half Marathon
Registration is open for the fifth annual Maryland Half Marathon to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. The race will be May 11 in the Maple Lawn community of Howard County. The cost of registration will be $75 until Jan. 31, $85 in February and $90 from March 1 to May 11. The cost of the Dozer's Kids Fun Run is $15. Register at mdhalfmarathon.com.
